Starting January, I'll be working at the Ford studio in Dearborn. I'll be trading in palm trees and sunny weather for snow and whatever trees there are in the midwest. It should be an awesome experience. Ford is currently my favorite of the big 3 and I'll have the opportunity to work with some great designers. For those not in So Cal Angeles Crest is one of the most scenic roads in the area, running the length of the San Gabriel mountains to an elevation of over 7000 feel. Unfortunately about 40 miles of it is now closed indefinitely due to the fires. I took this video last Spring and never put it up. Gonna miss that drive.

With their purchase of Saab I could see them trying to break into more mainstream sales kind of in the way Honda and Acura; VW , Audi, and Bentley, ect. What I want to actually do is do an interior project, so for now I've been messing around with the exterior. Replies welcome.

Long Beach Grand Prix

It was a breezy Thursday afternoon yesterday as the deep rumble of the Vette's made their way first through the streets of Long Beach. I couldn't help remember the first time I went to one of these. I was 12 and that time was when I made a decision that somehow my life career would have to revolve around cars. Not only are they fast and deafening, they are beautiful. I was pretty turned off by last years grand prix because my general admission tickets didn't guarantee a seat and I was corralled around like cattle for most of the race, so this year I decided to just go for practice, which turned out to be a great decision. No seating restrictions and the photography platforms were open to the public. It was a great day. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Heres the inspiration images I'm using for my Nissan project. The form language will be based on different types of explosions. In general I'm trying to capture the energy of an explosion in an automotive form language. The 1st image if from a graphic designer Justin Maller, who has some amazing work at www.superlover.com.au. Overall Im looking for new form language before going conventional. We'll see what happens in the longrun.

Well here it is!! My phone blew up after it aired from friends and family, haha. I have to give props to the people over at Epoch Films for putting together such a well executed commercial. They were a really professional team and got the sketches modeled perfectly (better than even I envisioned). Here's some of the sketches of the superbowl moonrover thats going to show this weekend. I'm pretty excited to see it and happy to see it came out pretty close to the final sketches. I also have a "making of" video which shows a 360 of the cg model and how they made the sketch pretty close to reality.

Well finally a preview has come through with a recent very exciting project! I had the privilege to work on the mother of all advertising venues, the Super Bowl! It was a quick project and looks like the sketches. Ill post the sketches after the 1st along with the final video. Till then heres the preview I just found on youtube.

7th Term

Back to school and its time to wean myself off Mazda form language. For independent project Im going to tackle Nissan compacts. Although I'm aware the Nissan Versa is a very economical affordable car, I still think it broadens Nissan's brand image way too much, especially with the GTR coming out. Therefore having a bottom level benchmark might bring a little more seriousness to the overall brand. Also Its a good opportunity to streamline Nissan graphics and form language/graphics to something that is more defined and recognizable. Right now the sport, utility, and economy seem to have very different faces.

This being a a GTI fighter, I wanted some premium and even more performance. a little researched revealed that the Subaru STI has an impressive 0-60 at 4.7 seconds! Its kind of a fluke because it can reach this before 3rd gear but still, something this model should combat, so for all you gearheads out there its time to talk specs because I really want it to influence the design as well as the inspiration. Turbo all wheel drive? Rear? Whats practical packaging for 2015?

As for Nissan any input would be great. Theory on form language, whats annoying/not working, ect.

Last Week

Well, this is my last week at the Mazda studio. This has been problably the funnest group of people I have ever worked with. I have again grown a lot as a designer and with a greater understanding of the world of transportation, I have a better idea of my place in it and where I want to head. I really appreciate Mazda Design America for being a studio where even the intern can have a strong opinion. I'll never forget all the hard work, lunches in the courtyard, games of kickball, and holiday getogethers. I'm truly greatful for my time here.

During my time here, I've watched one company's reaction to the biggest economic crisis is anyones lifetime. For sure the future is uncertain, but I have much optimism for what lies ahead of the mess. It's finally time to clense the automotive market and hopefully finally head it in a direction that is better for everyone. Its time for all industries to rid themselves of their dinosaurs and shed light on the ones ready to adapt to a new and intresting future. My hope is that people with great ideas will no longer have to struggle through long journeys through poorly managed politics. The next few years will probably be tough, but I think all the answers are there.

Independent Project

I Finally got around to some updated in my independent project, finally something I can show !! Anyhow, this is a concept for an offroad/off road road trip car. Basic premise is in the future people will be living in cities more,closer to work, ect. People would then have more of an interest in nature and discovery. I probably wont finish this by the end of my internship so it will become a side project in the next year.

Week 3 at Mazda and so far it becoming a great experience. I've been so busy with studio work as well as freelance work to have anything to show. I just finished a project for a tv commercial that will hopefully make it onto the tube in the near future. Here's some cool natural inspirational stuff...I think. I'm not sure if its old or not but you alien plants and ambient music goes so well together!

For the fall I will be returning to Orange County for an internship at the great Mazda design studio. Its such a great opportunity and I hope to push form and see what happens when my style merges with Mazda's. it will be an amazing experience I am sure.

Finally I am finished with the main boards for next weeks presentation. Im planning on having some simple animations depending on how well I can figure out aftereffects for the video composition. Overall I think Im happy with the look. The front and rear facia areas I would have liked to develop more as well as how these panels will actually attach, maybe Ill be looking more into that if I use it for grad show.

Week 9 and final meeting with Calty before the finals in 4 weeks. It felt nice to ditch digital for the past few days and do some marker sketches on tracing paper. I got around to starting another alias mock up. I guess the biggest concern at this point is the change between the 3 stages, because mine has very short stages and is meant to be little more than material and theme changes.

Scion Project week 6

I'm still struggling a little on simplifying my concept and communicating it through my sketches by next week's meeting with Calty. Its coming along but far away form being a fully developed concept. So far the it is still based on changing he buyer experience, with a central frame and interchangeable panels based on 3 themes ; sustainability, technology, and fashion, varying from a more exoskeletal design to flush panels.

Scion Project

Week 5 of the Scion project and the design phase begins. In an attempt to please the requirements of having a car that "lives" 3 times, I've been trying to change the buying experience in relating it to renting a apartment, manly because the life of a 20 year old is unstable and one less long term commitment is favorable. Customization will be treated like buying furniture. So far the ideation phase has been slow and I'm struggling to find a way to convey my concept. For form language I'm really interested in simple modular shapes merging to produce a more complex object, such as legos, or fish scales. Maybe next week Ill have some sketches that say that, but for now I'm just placing fashion graphics on surfaces.

Pre show jitters

So its 2:30 am and Calty presentations begin at 8:30...of course I can't sleep.

It still amazes me how the internet works. Early this morning I got a call from a guy from the Sci-Fi channel who saw my Nasa moonrover on car design news and wanted higher quality pictures to put on their tech blogger site Dvice.com, which I did. 12 hours later the pictures could be found on nearly 20 other gadget websites like gizmodo. Some were in Spanish and Russian. It amazes me how even ten years ago this would have been impossible, much less the rest of human history.

It was amusing to see some of the commentary, especially the Gizmodo columnist who photoshopped "gas guzzler" onto my rendering and claimed it was the SUV of moon rovers. Most of the comments shot it down as an impossible engineering feat, but I must say, so was flying at one time...if we don't dream about it, we'll never get there.

I've been addicted to TED lectures by BMW the past few weeks. A friend from CCS sent me this lecture by Ross Lovegrove. I have to say I've always been drawn to nature as inspirations for my designs and this lecture brings it to the next level.

I am amazed to see the progress of the Burg Dubai to being the tallest building in the world. At 2600 feet it will tower almost 1000ft higher than Taipei 101, an amazing architectural feat. Dubai is on its way to looking like something out of Star wars, minus the flying cars.
